Kumiko is a traditional Japanese woodworking technique in which thin strips of wood are precisely fitted together without nails or adhesives, forming intricate geometric patterns used in shoji screens and sliding doors. Here, the pattern is constructed entirely from tape on plexiglass. When the work is mounted away from the wall, light passes through and casts shifting shadows behind it. As the light changes, the shadows move, creating a second, living version of the pattern. The piece can be displayed on a wall or used as a freestanding divider, as kumiko was originally intended.
