Inside this hexagonal panel, hanabishi, the water chestnut flower, fills the surface in gold against teal, a pattern associated with hard work and quiet perseverance. The hexagon shape itself is the kikko, the tortoiseshell pattern, a symbol of longevity. When several panels are brought together, they unite into a larger kikko pattern — each piece complete on its own, more powerful as a whole.
