A single eye gazes directly through an opening in the kumiko, a traditional Japanese woodworking pattern. In Japan, there are many proverbs about eyes. For example, "the eyes say as much as the mouth" reminding us that feelings cannot be hidden. “Walls have ears, shoji screens have eyes" teaching us to always act with honesty, because someone is always watching.
