Fujimaru, combining fuji (wisteria) and maru (circle), is among the most noble classical Japanese court patterns, with origins in the 7th century. The Fujiwara clan, the most powerful family in Japan at the time, cherished the wisteria motif and used it extensively in their court dress. Today this pattern is still used on the formal garments of Shinto priests.
